Sunday Rant: On Anniversary Parties.

I have to apologize – this is not about personal finance at all, but I saw this on twitter the day after I posted my Pinterest wedding query, and I wish I’d seen it sooner because it’s awesome (see? Mason jars!):

Beards and lemonade and barns, oh my! But what caught my eye was the “80% Hipster” category – they need more time on Pinterest and then “their one year anniversary party will definitely be a hipster affair”.

Hold on. Did I read that correctly? A one year anniversary party? Is the state of marriage nowadays so terrible that we need to throw an anniversary party after you’ve been married for only one freaking year? Is this something our self-obsessed facebook generation (myself included) is perpetuating now?

Um, no. A one year anniversary is something to be enjoyed and celebrated by the couple. Go out for dinner, eat your slice of wedding cake you’ve been keeping in the freezer, buy a card and some flowers, and be done with it! Wouldn’t a one year anniversary party just be Wedding Redux? I just can’t imagine why one year is so important that you have to throw a party and invite people to it. Are they expected to bring gifts? Does this come from the generation of participation ribbons – that every event, no matter how small, should be celebrated and posted all over facebook? Parties are expensive, are you really going to have one every year? My parents have been married for more than thirty years and the only time they would have considered having a party would be at 25 years or more. But one year? No. Let’s nip this in the bud and make sure it doesn’t become a thing, alright? Good chat.
